SUDS
The reduction of natural surfaces and subsequent increased usage of hard impermeable surfaces (roads, parking areas, roofs etc) throughout the last century has contributed to the increasing incidence of locallised and regional flooding and pollution of rivers, estuaries and coastal waters.
Rainfall that once infiltrated through natural ground is now typically drained over impermeable surfaces containing oil, grease, rubber, silt, cleaning fluids etc., creating increasingly polluted surface water runoff.
Sustainable drainage systems (SUDS) contain a series of alternative, cost effective techniques that are designed to manage surface water runoff as close to the source as possible in a more sustainable manner than traditional systems.
A key aspect of SUDS is source control. By controlling run off at its source, site runoff, outfall volumes and pollution are reduced. Source control techniques include porous surfacing and permeable paving systems.
To achieve eco friendly porous surfaces, designers have a wide choice of products ranging from tough flexible extruded meshes, open cell paver systems and a reinforced root zone system. These systems offer designers the flexibility of either grass or gravel surfaces that are suitable for a wide range of applications and traffic conditions.
The Benefits
Reduces surface temperature around buildings
Permits water infiltration/drainage
No surface drains required
Recharges water table
Easy to install
Source control for SUDS
